Italy has given me two very different kinds of work: a wedding in Tuscany, and a couple session in Venice. They are here as they happened — a whole wedding day in the first case, an afternoon and an evening in the second.

Tuscany
A roofless abbey, a hill town in the middle of the afternoon, and a road lined with cypresses at the hour the sun drops behind them. The Tuscany wedding is here.
Venice
Not a wedding — a couple session, made between the mask shops, the Grand Canal and the square before the crowds arrive. The Venice session is here.
Tuscany
A roofless abbey with the sky where the ceiling should be, an avenue of cypresses that runs straight into the sunset, and a brick terrace above the vineyards. Tuscany gives you three completely different pictures within half an hour of each other.

The cypress avenue
This is the photograph people picture when they say Tuscany, and it only works for about twenty minutes a day. The light has to come down the road, not across it.

Above the vineyards
The last hour of the day, a brick wall and the hills going soft behind it. A long train and a low sun are a good combination.
