A Wedding at Hotel Bristol, Belgrade

A wedding at Hotel Bristol in Belgrade — wood panelling, bookshelves, floral wallpaper and lamplight, photographed on the same afternoon as the ceremony at Salon 1905, ten minutes away.

The rooms at Hotel Bristol

Bristol is a hotel from 1912 and it photographs like one. The rooms are close and warm rather than grand: dark wood, shelves of books, patterned wallpaper, and lamps that do most of the work once the afternoon light drops. A dress reads completely differently here than it does under a marble staircase — softer, closer, with the room pressing in around it.

Photographing a wedding at Hotel Bristol

The rooms are small, which means no lighting rigs and no rearranging furniture. I work with the lamps that are already there and with whatever comes through the windows, and I stay out of the way — a room this size does not take two photographers and a light stand. What it gives back is intimacy: the couple, the detail of the wallpaper behind them, and nothing else in the frame.
