Cyprus

A hillside resort above the sea in Cyprus, palm trees over the dinner tables and a stage built on the lawn. This was a christening and the celebration that followed it — a full day that began in an Orthodox church and ended with a band playing under the palms long after dark.

Seen from above

Some celebrations only make sense from the air. The stage, the round tables and the lit paths between them read as a single composition from above, and at night the whole garden turns into one lantern on the hillside. I fly for these frames when the place allows it.

The venue

Stone villas, cypresses and a blue door in a white wall — Cyprus gives you the Mediterranean without the crowds of the better known islands, and light that stays warm long into the evening.

The party

The evening belonged to the stage. Vlado Georgiev sang, and Ana Stajdohar played with her band under the palms, with a saxophone carrying the last hours of the night. Performance light is difficult light — it moves, it changes colour every few seconds, and there is no second take. It is also where some of the best frames of any celebration are made.
