Salon 1905 is the reason most of these photographs needed no arranging. A marble staircase runs up between two statues, the ceiling above it is gilded, and there is enough room at the foot of it for a gown to be opened out properly. Daylight comes down from above, which means portraits on the stairs work without a single light added.

The room is built for entrances, so that is what I photograph: the walk down, the turn at the landing, the moment the train settles on the marble. The rest of the day I stay quiet and let the architecture carry the frame — a hall like this needs the right distance and the right hour, not direction.
