A wedding day in Tuscany

A Tuscan wedding day is long and it is built around the light. Mornings are slow and indoors, the ceremony lands in the hardest hour of the afternoon, and everything worth waiting for happens in the ninety minutes before the sun drops behind the hills. I plan the day around that, which in practice means asking for twenty minutes of your own at the right time and nothing else.

Light, and where it falls

Three places, half an hour apart, that do not look like the same country. A roofless abbey where the sky stands in for the ceiling, so the light comes straight down and portraits need nothing added. A road lined with cypresses that only works for about twenty minutes a day, and only when the sun comes down the road rather than across it. And a brick terrace above the vineyards, where the hills go soft behind a long train in the last hour of the day.

Travelling to photograph a wedding in Tuscany

I travel from Serbia, which is a short flight to Florence or Pisa, and I arrive the day before. Travel is quoted separately and kept simple: one photographer, no crew to accommodate, no lighting rigs in your ceremony. A large part of these weddings comes through planners, and I am used to working inside someone else’s timeline without pulling at it.
